THE SHORT VERSION

DNS record types at a glance

A and AAAA records point a name to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. CNAME makes one name an alias of another. MX lists the mail servers, NS the nameservers, and TXT holds text such as SPF, DMARC, and site verification codes.

SOA describes the zone itself, CAA says which certificate authorities may issue SSL certificates, and DS and DNSKEY carry DNSSEC keys. SRV records, such as _sip._tcp.example.com, locate specific services.

Common questions

How do I check the DNS records for a domain?

Enter the domain above and leave the type on All common types. The table shows every record returned, with its TTL in seconds.

What is a reverse DNS lookup?

It finds the hostname for an IP address using a PTR record. Enter an IP address above and we query its in-addr.arpa or ip6.arpa name.

Why can’t I see all of a domain’s records?

DNS has no “list everything” query. You can only ask for specific names and types, so records under other names, such as DKIM keys, need their exact name.
